The Myth of “Work-Life Balance”

Whenever anyone mentions not having any time outside of work, it is usually always answered with the idea of maintaining a “Work-Life Balance”. The problem with that mentality is the fact that it is usually excusing the employer and societal issues and putting all the blame on the employer. I mean, if it’s solely your fault then there is no reason to change the system, you’re just failing at changing yourself.

When talking about work it becomes hard to properly illustrate just how bad the situation has become, or to put it better, how bad Americans have realized the situation was. We have been spending decades on the benefits we fought for thanks to unions but, in all honesty, nothing else has changed since then. Instead it feels like the narrative has changed, and instead of it being unions and worker solidarity that has improved the American working atmosphere, it is the jobs themselves.

This narrative is inherently false. while not outright stating these things, it was seemed like the general consensus is that the 40 hour work week, proper compensation for overtime and even require lunches and breaks are somehow thanks to some mythical unspoken agreement between companies and the general public. This logic is flawed and most worker benefits had to be fought for.

Balance: How to keep it.

One of the ideas that I like to live by is the idea of “Balance”. it’s also one of the toughest ideas to maintain. How does one achieve or acquire balance? What standards does balance qualify? When is one prioritizing the wrong things in the sake of “Balance”. These are all different question that tend to never truly get answered. It is also questions I have been asking myself quite recently, in fact.

Dealing with work and a new position can be challenging for many people, especially if there is outstanding workplace drama. I have been in that type of situation and it can be difficult. I have finally managed to get some time to get into a groove of getting things done (although the guilt of lounging around all day kind of helps me in my task).

I have found that there is not just one way that one might attain balance and there are, in fact, a multitude ways. some people create lists, some use apps, some just kind of will themselves, but for me, this only seemed to be a stopgap.

Like I love to draw and to write and I have so many ideas but how does one find the time to do them all. It’s like a neverending consumption of time and you have to prioritize is all. It’s kind of crazy in theory. I don’t have all the answers but I’ve realized that the only effective way to keep balance is to just take it one day at a time.

By trying to balance multiple days in advance, many will end up just falling off but by doing just one day of tasks that need to be done in conjunction with some interesting and fun things, it can help improve your outlook and keep balance.

Balance is key. – Jet
